FAQ - RANGER PortaBin

General Questions

1. How do I change the date setting for Portabin?

There is no date setting for Portabin. The date information is actually retrieved from the data files created by the camera and stored inside the memory card. Hence as long as you have set the camera's date correctly, the Portabin will be able to create a folder name corresponding to the date that the camera was last used.

2. Can the Portabin be connected directly to camera, CDRW drive or DVD drive USB port for data transfer?

No, the above-mentioned product is designed to connect to computer only. No direct connection to other devices like camera, CDRW drive or DVD drive.

3. Does the battery need to be charged for 12 hours for the first charging.

No, if you have the Portabin which comes with 1400 mAH battery, the charging will automatically be stopped once it is fully charged, hence there is no benefit in charging longer than necessary.

4. I cannot find the copied files/folders.

Go to VIEW FILE LIST or VIEW THUMBNAIL. The unit will display the contents of last copied folder. To get out from the folder, look for a folder with name – “..”. Move the cursor to highlight the “..” folder and press Enter button. This will get unit to display the next folder level and repeating the step will get to the root directory where you can see all the copied folders listed on the display.

No, using Mac OS to initialize or format the unit will corrupt the partition and make the unit no longer usable. As the unit utilizes a FAT32 file system, if you really need to format, do so using Windows 98/SE/ME/2000/2003/XP operating system.

6. Why can’t I view any of the pictures on my digital camera after copying them from the unit to the memory cards?

The unit will copy the file/folder to the root directory of the memory card. However, the camera will only find the pictures stored in the folder structure which it will recognize. The folder structure used is normally :\DCIM\”Camera Model name”\”Picture files”. To find out what is the folder structure looks like, simply copied a memory card and check how the files being stored in the unit. When copying back to the memory card, copy the files to the folder under :\DCIM\”Camera Model name”, then copy this folder back to the memory card.
