FAQ - RANGER USB VoIP GATEWAY

Usage Enquiries

1. “Must I leave my computer on to make/receive calls on SKYPE?”
A: To make or receive calls on Skype, your computer must be on to be able to run the SKYPE software. Next, the computer must have a working Internet connection to be able to connect to other users on SKYPE.

2. “Is the Ranger RUA-350 Gateway able to give me a Cordless VoIP solution?”
A: Yes, If you already own a Cordless phone at home, you can plug that phone to the RUA-350 gateway and transform it into a dual phone. This is a very cost effective way to be VoIP-enabled as you do not need to buy an expensive Cordless Dual Phone to add-on to your existing phone in the house/office.

3. “Must I leave my computer on to use the ‘Divert’ features of the RUA-350?”
A: Yes, the computer must be on to be able to run Skype and the accompanying software SkypeMate for the diverting feature to work.

4. “Does the software SKYPE come with the gateways?”
A: The software SKYPE is provided free as an installer CD with each gateway purchased. Also the SKYPE software is a free software that can also be downloaded from the website; www.skype.com

5. “Can the VoIP gateways be used with other Voice over Internet software? (E.g. Yahoo, MSN Chat, Google Chat)
A: The RUA-250/RUA-350 is tested to be compatible with the SKYPE software. Skype is a global specialist in VoIP technology and we at RANGER believe that this will provide our customers with the clearest and most reliable Voice over Internet calls.

6. “Is the SKYPE software easy-to-use for all family members?”
A: Yes, our phones and gateways are very user-friendly. All you have to do is install the SKYPE software from the Installer CD provided with each box. Plug the phones into the USB port of your computer. Then register yourself and you friends/relatives as a user and you can start talking straight away. If using the VoIP Gateways, it is as simple as just picking up your house phone when a Skype call comes in.

7. “Can the RUA-350 Gateway be used with a Cordless DECT phone?”
A: Yes, the gateway can convert any normal PSTN normal phone into a Skype-enabled phone. PSTN phones include any ordinary phone found in your home, be it a Cordless DECT one or the traditional phone with handset.

8. “Can the RUA-350 Gateway be used with an office PABX system?”
A: Yes, the RUA-350 gateway can be used on a simple PABX system by connecting it to the DID telephone line. NOTE: The gateway is not able to work with KeyPhone systems, only PABX and normal PSTN phone lines.

9. “Can the phone be used to make calls to either fixed line/mobile phones?”
A: Yes, the software SKYPE has a prepaid service called SKYPEOUT which allows you to call from PC to a normal landline/mobile phone. This is done by going online to www.skype.com to buy SKYPEOUT credits online. Once these pre-paid credits are bought, you can call to a normal landline/handphone at a very cheap rate that is cheaper than most IDD calls and is also comparable to pre-paid calling cards. There is no monthly subscription or signing-on fee for SKYPEOUT.

10. “How does the RUA-350 gateway help you to save on International calls?”
A: The RUA-350 gateway allows you to divert an incoming Skype call to a local land phone number or local handphone number using local rates out. This effectively means that you are able to make a call overseas to any local number at a minimal fee. E.g. If the Ranger RUA-350 is set up in a Singapore office, when a Skype call is made from say Germany to Singapore side, it is able to divert this Skype call to a local handphone. So the only cost to both parties are the local call using the office phone to call to the handphone and also the cost of receiving the diverted Skype call (Assuming Handphone user doesn’t have an incoming free plan)

Technical Enquiries

1. “I have set the Number to Divert my incoming Skype calls to but still there is no diverting done. What is wrong?”
A: In order for the Skype-to-phone name card to work, you need to ensure 2 things. The first is that you must click the Select Friends button in the Divert menu of the SkypeGate software. On this screen, you need to add those Skype Contacts from the left hand-side box to the right hand-side box to allow these Skype contacts to be able to divert to your assigned number. This feature is to control which group of Skype contacts you would like to be able to divert to you.

The second is that under the Divert To box in the Divert menu, the number that is entered must not have a + prefix or the country code in front of it. You should only enter the number to divert to as you would when making a normal local phone call.

2. “Does the phone that is attached to the RUA-350 Gateway ring when people call you through the SKYPE software?”
A: Yes, the phone that is attached to the TEL jack in the RUA-350 gateway will ring as per normal when a Skype call comes in.

3. “Does the phone that is attached to the RUA-350 Gateway ring when people call you using a normal PSTN phone?”
A: Yes the phone that is attached to the TEL jack in the RUA-350 gateway will ring as per normal when a normal phone call (PSTN) comes in.

4. “Does the SKYPE software support video conferencing?”
A: At present the SKYPE software doesn’t have a video conferencing function. However, SKYPE allows up to 5 users in a conference chat. The video will have to be from a separate software that is normally provided with most PC webcams.

5. “Is the voice when talking with this phone clear?”
A: The phones feature echo cancellation and full duplex communications which help you to talk and listen very clearly.

6. “Can this phone be used if I already have SKYPE software installed?”
A: Yes, this phone is specifically designed for the SKYPE software and will be compatible with SKYPE once the SKYPEMate software that comes with the installer CD is installed.

7. “How do I dial out from the phone to other SKYPE users who are online?”
A: You will need to have the SKYPE software open. You then need to pick up the phone set, on your Skype software, select the Skype contact to call with your mouse and click the green dial button to make the call.

8. “Is this phone able to work through firewalls?”
A: The SKYPE software can work through most firewalls. For a more detailed explanation lease refer to www.skype.com

11. “I can’t hear clearly what the lady is saying when I try to use the Phone-to-Skype forwarding function? What is she trying to tell em and what do I need to do to make this Skype call from my Handphone?”
A: The voice that appears when you call into your phone to use the Phone-to-Skype feature will prompt you to first enter a password (If you had set any in the Divert Menu of the SkypeGate) followed by the # key. If you have set a password, please enter it and press the # key. If you only want to leave a voice message, press the # key straight away when you are first prompted by the lady. Once you have entered the password, there will be a dial tone. At this point, enter the Speed-Dial number of the Skype contact you are calling to and press #. The call will now be forwarded to the Skype contact.
